Step 2, Motivation

I have a class monetary system, and I have had it over the past 3 years as well.

Previous classes worked hard based solely on the dollars they get rewarded throughout the day, no extra motivation was necessary.

This class... that wasn't working.

Now, in previous years, I would add extra incentives on the days that I knew tended to be crazier, party days, day after Halloween, etc. This extra incentive came in the form of a 5 or 10 dollar prize (both much higher than the 1's I give out throughout the day) to the quietest boy and girl for the day. Everyone worked extra hard on those days in the hope they would be chosen.

So, while still practicing procedures, to some success, I add this extra motivation.

The five dollar prize at the end of the day was so successful in motivating this class, it has become a regular thing, where every day two 5 dollar prizes are issued.

Its biggest value comes in moments where talking is starting and I casually say, "I wonder who will win my prize today," and the class as a whole settles down.

I give 5 stars to this particular method, though there were still some boys that both procedures and this motivation were not helping them quite enough.
