Procedures
Talked about by Harry Wong, and very important at our school. Many textbooks on managing kids talks about the need to be consistent in setting limits, not making threats, and following through.
I had class procedures, I have had them since day 1. Usually I spend the first couple weeks practicing, and then it becomes second nature for the kids, and I don't have to practice any more.
I had slacked off from being very consistent in my expectations. I tell them I want straight quiet lines, but then I would just leave to go to lunch or snack with them still talking so we could get out the door.
A few weeks ago, I decided that the first step towards improvement is practicing. So, for November, and until it is no longer necessary, we practice... and practice.
The kids will line up, if there is talking, they are sent back. We do this until it is right. Sometimes we are 5 minutes late for lunch or recess before we make it there. But now, a few weeks later, it seems to be working. We are down to practicing just once or twice instead of 3 or more times.
This will be a continued struggle, but so far, it appears to be paying off.
