Update on Success of Strategies

In previous blogs I mentioned some of the things I was doing to help with behavior in my classroom. I would like to take a minute to mention the effectiveness of the strategies.

Classroom seating-
Having approximately half of my class in rows and the rest in teams has been proven an effective strategy, especially for those kids who were having trouble working in groups, and were getting distracted. An added benefit is that the rows are in the front of the classroom, so the kids that have more trouble behaviorly are in the front where I can correct them more easily.

Team Points-
These have been an extremely effective addition to my classroom management system. The kids are willing to work much harder, and be a lot more quiet in effort to earn these points. Also, the prize of getting to go to lunch and recess first is very motivating to the kids, while it costs me nothing. I feel like I have had less tallies since starting this system, and that is a definite advantage.

No taking away marbles-
This is still hard for me to adjust to, but the kids are still motivated by the jar and the hope of a party. I still count down on occasion, but instead of taking away marbles if they are loud, I instead charge class dollars to the individual students who are still talking after the countdown.

Overall I feel like I am gaining more control over my classroom though these strategies, but I still have my case study students struggling to stay quiet and under control. More on them and my strategies for them later.
